There were two waves of snake collar popularity during the 19th century, one around the 1830s 40s and one towards the end of the century. The earlier examples tended to be much more ornate, often decorated with elaborate chased detailing and studded with gemstones; the second wave snakes, like this one, are far more cartoonish minimalist in design and I absolutely love them.
