The striker pads are installed on the sides of the case so you basically put loose matches inside. It is made from an imitation silver called Alpacca or German silver. It is a little tarnished and worn. One of the more elegant match safes I have come across. It wants to automatically close, which is a nice feature, as it makes sure the matches don't fall out (but is inconvenient for taking photos).
